There are two general theories on the ratios of flags.  The first theory is the ascending ratio theory.  The second is the proportions theory.  For both theories the height of the silk is typically 1/2 the length of the pole.

Ascending Ratios

Simply stated, the ascending ratios theory says that the larger the flag, the larger the silk ratio should be.  The following chart gives the dimensions for flags made with ascending ratios.

Pole Size Silk Size (HxW) Silk Ratio
2 feet (24 inches) 12"x 14" 1:1.2
3 feet (36 inches) 18"x24" 1:1.3
4 feet (48 inches) 24"x34" 1: 1.4
5 feet (60 inches) 30"x44" 1:1.5
6 feet (72 inches) 36"x56" 1:1.6
7 feet (84 inches) 42"x70" 1:1.7
8feet (96 inches) 48"x86" 1:1.8
10 feet (120 inches) 60"x115" 1:1.9
12 feet (144 inches) 72"x144" 1:2

Fixed Ratios

Put simply, the Fixed Ratio theory states that some ratios are more pleasing to the eye than other ratios, with the Golden Ratio believed to be the most pleasing.

Golden Ratio - 1:1.618

Pole Size Silk Size (HxW) Silk Ratio
5 feet ( 60 inches) 30" x 48.5" 1:1.618
6 feet ( 72 inches) 36" x 58.25" 1:1.618

Presidential Ratio - 10:19

Pole Size Silk Size (HxW) Silk Ratio
5 feet ( 60 inches) 30" x 57" 10:19
6 feet ( 72 inches) 36" x 68.4" 10:19

Picture Perfect Ratio - 2:3

Pole Size Silk Size (HxW) Silk Ratio
5 feet ( 60 inches) 30" x 45" 2:3
6 feet ( 72 inches) 36" x 54" 2:3
